Preserving Culture. Inspiring Expression. Strengthening Identity.
At Specialists Junior School, Shona is more than a language — it is the heartbeat of our culture and identity.
We teach Shona to help learners communicate effectively, appreciate their heritage, and express themselves with pride and respect.
Through stories, songs, proverbs, and traditional wisdom, learners discover that their mother language is a powerful tool for thinking, learning, and connecting with others.
- Traditional Storytelling Sessions: preserving oral literature.
- Drama & Poetry Competitions: celebrating creativity and cultural expression.
- Proverb of the Week: teaching wisdom through sayings.
- Cultural Heritage Day: songs, dances, and skits in Shona.
Our Teaching Approach
Specialists Junior School promotes cultural pride and communication skills through a strong Shona Language program — grammar, literature, and oral tradition aligned with ZIMSEC Grade 7.
Learners develop confidence in speaking Shona through dialogues, role plays, storytelling, and oral presentations.
We encourage correct pronunciation, tone, and expression while promoting respect for elders and cultural values.
From folktales and poems to short stories and plays, learners are exposed to rich Shona literature.
They learn to read fluently, understand main ideas, and draw moral lessons from texts that reflect everyday Zimbabwean life.
Pupils practise writing sentences, paragraphs, and essays in proper Shona.
They learn spelling, punctuation, and grammar through composition writing, letter writing, and creative exercises such as poetry or dialogue writing.
We emphasize correct language structure, tense usage, and vocabulary expansion.
Through continuous exercises, learners understand word formation, idioms, and proverbs that enrich their communication.
Lessons include Shona traditions, idioms, taboos, and customs that promote respect, unity, and identity.
Cultural days, song performances, and poetry recitals help learners live the language rather than just learn it.
Our Goal
Our goal is to produce learners who communicate fluently and confidently in Shona, respect their language and culture, and appreciate its role in shaping their identity.
We aim to prepare pupils for ZIMSEC Grade 7 Shona examinations while nurturing pride in their heritage and love for Zimbabwean culture.
At Specialists Junior School, we believe that mastering Shona helps children know who they are — and where they come from.
